Hooray !!!

Dr. Schwartz from Rehab came by w/ the results of Charlie’s CT from last night. Charlie’s ears and cochlea’s look great meaning he is a candidate for implants and the probability of him being able to hear is good. We’ll have to see when they might actually do the implants because it’s kind of a no no to do them on kids under 1. I’ve done a little research on cochlear implants and they are little gems of sound and they usually do much better in little kids than adults, good news. Some interesting things about the implants that I didn’t know are that the sound isn’t like what we’re used to, it’s more digital almost robotic. They pretty much only work for hearing voices in quiet settings and all voices sound the same so if sometime down the road you call Char on the phone you’ll have to tell you who you are because he won’t be able to tell . We are so excited that this might help our little man because no one should have to go through life without having heard the PA announcer at Lavell Edwards Stadium say “And that’s another Cougar FIRST DOWN!” I found an interesting bit on the NPR (National Liberal errrr… Public Radio) website about how those w/ cochlear implants hear music. You should check it out if you have 4 minutes and 39 seconds. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4961269 At first I was sad that Charlie wouldn’t be able to enjoy all the great music that is out there and hear how great his dad does at the Messiah sing in every Christmas but at least we might be able to communicate. Anyone who reads this don’t tell B-Low that Charlie is getting implants because we still want him to learn sign language for Kathi’s sake.

So it's over two years since that story and perhaps the science has improved even more so?? Cool to hear how it comes through the implants. Our FD mechanic has them but I had no idea he didn't hear voices as we do.

Is there a reason why they don't want to do it to kids under 1?

Rob, you said that the implants only work for hearing voices in quiet settings, so the stunned silence at Edwards Stadium would be ideal to hear "And that's another Cougar First Down!", right? That is great news. Since he is so close to 1 and the window of opportunity is not too wide, are they considering it? Or wait until he is 1?

Rob and Angel this is Chyrese (you know Biff's Wife) I totally dont know how to blogg. I'm seriously computer illiterate i have written and erased comments like I think 100,000 times but I'm going to post this time. My nephew cought spinal men about 11 years ago at the age of 7 months and guess what he has a cochlear implant and it is awesome, seriously!!!!!! Just to make you feel better, he still goes to PCMC for updates and upgrades on his cochlear. He can talk to us on the phone and this past christmas he got to jump on the i-pod train. (thats railroad talk Rob). If you have any question about the Cochlear, call us.

Our thoughts and prayers have been with you this whole entire time. We got ptetty used to the PCMC routine with Tack. Tack prays for Charlie every night, he doesnt like the idea of him being there even though he doesnt know him. Biff and I love and are proud of you guys and love you (Biff especially loves Jared)
Give Charlie a hug
Love Biff, Chyrese and Fam

Great news guys! One blessing, I think, is that Charlie won't know the difference--the things he hears will still sound beautiful to him. Hang in there and let me know if I can bring you anything. Love and prayers.
