No More tubes (on his face anyway) :)

He is back from surgery and everything went well. He no longer has any tubes on his sweet face and now has the tube coming out a little above his belly button. Dr. Jackson said everything went according to plan and took pictures of his esophagus and stomach. Everything looks normal!!! He did require oxygen when he was in recovery but then came back up to normal. Right now he is sleeping peacefully and all of his vital signs look great. Thanks to everyone for your prayers!!!

Earlier today we went to the "sound booth" to test if the hearing aids turned up to amplify 100 decibels would have any impact. As you can see he slept right through. Rob was in the chamber with him and had ear plug in and said that some of the trials hurt his ears. This information will be used when the audiologist discusses his case in the cochlear implant conference

Charlie looks great with his angelic little face intact now! You must be glad to have the tube out of his nose. You'll find the belly g-tube to be much easier.

So what does that mean for the possibility of implants if he had no response with the hearing aids?

Angel- I just did a quick (and incomplete) literature review, but I've come across a few reasons to push for bliateral implants. More studies have been done on adults than children, but the results could be expected to match. Speech perception, especially in noise, has been shown to be better with bilateral implants. This is really important for any future language acquisition. Sounds are harder to locate with only one implant. Another important consideration is that when implanting only one ear, there is no guarantee that the "better" ear can be determined, especially at Charlie's age. By implanting both, you're sure to have the bst results possible. Some preliminary pediatric research shows younger children adapt to bilateral hearing faster than older children.
I've emailed an audiology friend and asked if she knows of any more recent studies in journals I don't have access to. I hope that helps. I'm so glad all went well today!

You know what Charlie has come so far he will continue to do well and if he cannot hear I know God will help with the Cochlear implants. I know God has very special plans for this beautiful guy. Many many prayers on this good Friday for Charlie from Massachusetts!!!

I'm so glad the surgery went well...I hope his recovery tonight goes well too. Do they start feeding immediately or will they wait?

That is one of the sweetest faces I have ever seen. Even when he is wailing, he manages to evoke a boatload of sympathy. He is so dang cute.

The prayers are still coming fast and furious and frequent. In the last two days I have seen prayers answered and know that Charlie, too, is receiving them...just not at our "immediate gratification" speed.
Patience SUCKS!

Love you guys....My oldest son-in-law is doing better and is still critical, but I believe he is making positive progress.

Hey, I finished my online high school stuff before I hit this website... You know, do your homework first, Jill...Well, I did..many seniors will be thrilled to have the credit..

Sleep well all of you.. Char, keep bringing and keep that HR where it needs to be...
Love Jill B

Oh sweet Charlie... you have been through so much and you just keep fighting. I haven't been able to check the blog for 24 hours and I cried when I saw the picture of your beautiful and perfect face. Today we went with the grandkids to an Easter Egg Hunt and it felt like something was missing without you there. Keep fighting buddy!! I love you so much!!

So glad the procedure went well today. I'm sure it's nice to kiss his cute little face without that tube in the way :-) We are thinking about you and praying for you often!

i'm so happy the surgery went well. i was anxious about it. another step closer to getting that boy home. don't be too discouraged about the 100 decibles. things are going to work themselves out there. and if not, matt says he's decided to be an audiologist, so he'll get him squared away.

when the time comes, let me know if you need me to take coop home - i've got plenty of room ;)
